6 Days Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Adventure with Hut Stay

The Marangu Route, famously known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and most established path to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the southeast, it is the only route offering dormitory-style hut accommodation instead of camping, with facilities such as communal dining halls and basic washrooms along the way. Although often considered one of the easier routes, it has a lower summit success rate due to many climbers attempting the 5-day option without sufficient acclimatization. A 6-day itinerary is recommended for better success, allowing an extra day to adapt to altitude conditions. While the route is less scenic because of its same ascent and descent path, it remains a popular choice, especially during the rainy season, for trekkers seeking comfort and simplicity over camping.

Itinerary In Details

Day 1 :

Marangu Gate (1879m) - Mandara Hut (2720m)

Departing from Moshi, you will enjoy a scenic 60-minute drive through Marangu Village to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. Upon arrival, we will complete permit registration while observing the lively atmosphere of trekking crews preparing for their climb. The trail then begins through lush rainforest with winding paths, where your guide will introduce you to the rich flora, fauna, and natural wildlife of the mountain. At lower elevations, the path may be muddy and slippery, so proper rain gear and trekking poles are highly recommended. Your first overnight stop will be Mandara Hut, a collection of wooden A-frame huts located in a peaceful forest clearing. Transport: Private transfer (1 hour, 40 km), Hiking time: 3–4 hours (7 km).

Day 2 :

Mandara Hut (2720m) - Horombo Hut (3720m)

After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, you will leave the rainforest behind and continue your ascent through the heathland zone, where unique plants such as giant lobelias and groundsels can be seen. The trail then opens into wide moorlands dominated by small shrubs, offering increasingly dramatic views of the surrounding landscape. A lunch stop will be taken en route, where you can enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak. The journey continues steadily until you reach Horombo Huts in the late afternoon, located beneath the impressive Kibo summit viewpoint. As you gain altitude, temperatures begin to drop noticeably. Hiking time: 6–7 hours (11 km), Ascent: 1,000m, Maximum altitude: 3,720m.

Day 3 :

Acclimatization Day at Horombo

You can spend a full day and a second night at Horombo Hut as part of your acclimatization program. On this day, you may choose to relax at the camp or take an optional guided hike towards Mawenzi Base Camp, passing the striking Zebra Rocks along the way. This excursion is highly recommended as it helps with altitude adaptation while offering stunning views of the mountain landscape and surrounding wilderness. Our team will assist in organizing short walks around the area to enhance your acclimatization experience. Hiking time: 2–3 hours (2 km), Ascent: 300m.

Day 4 :

Horombo Hut (3720m) - Kibo Hut (4720m)

After breakfast, you will continue trekking through the gradually fading heathland, which soon opens into a vast, lunar-like landscape as you enter the wide saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. A lunch stop will be made along the way, where you can take in views of the upcoming summit route on Kibo, which you will begin climbing later that night. The last reliable water source is at 4,130m. From Kibo Hut, the final summit ascent rises a further 1,195m to Uhuru Peak. Upon arrival, the evening will be spent resting and preparing early for the summit attempt. Hiking time: 6–7 hours (10 km), Ascent: 1,000m.

Day 5 :

Kibo Hut (4720m) - Uhuru Peak (5895m) - Horombo Hut (3720m)

Excitement builds as you wake for an early midnight to 2 a.m. start, beginning the most demanding stage of the trek both physically and mentally. The ascent continues in a slow switchback rhythm, as you push through loose scree and possibly snow on your way toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. A short rest here rewards you with a breathtaking sunrise, while faster trekkers may experience it from Uhuru Peak itself. From Gilman’s Point, the final stretch takes approximately one hour through snowy terrain to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, where you will celebrate your achievement. After taking photos and enjoying the summit moment, you will descend back to Kibo Hut for breakfast before continuing down to Horombo Hut for your overnight stay. Hiking time: 12–14 hours (17 km), Ascent: 1,175m.

Day 6 :

Horombo Hut (3720m)- Marangu Gate (1879m)

After breakfast, you will take part in a heartfelt farewell ceremony with your mountain crew, celebrating your achievement and sharing a final moment of appreciation with the guides, cooks, and porters before saying goodbye. The descent continues through the rainforest, stopping at Mandara Huts for lunch along the way. The trail becomes steeper, wetter, and muddy due to the change in altitude and warmer conditions, so trekking poles and gaiters are highly recommended. Upon arrival at Marangu Park Gate, you will receive your summit certificates as a recognition of your successful climb. From there, a vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi, approximately a 60-minute drive. Transport: Private transfer (1 hour, 40 km), Hiking time: 6–7 hours (18 km), Descent: 1,841m.
